The company was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz with the name of Agassiz & Compagnie and then took on its current name in 1866 following the acquisition of a land in a place known as Les Longines on which the entrepreneur built the first building able to group together under one roof the various watch production phases. In 1867, Ernest Francillon succeeded Auguste Agassiz in charge of the firm, and in 1880 registered the name and the current logo making Longines the company with the oldest logo between the manufacturers of watches.
Thanks to a centuries-old tradition of watchmaking, Longines pays great attention to the protection of the memory and in doing so, has been able to preserve its rich heritage enhanced through the Museum inside its Swiss office. The exhibition tells every facet of the history of the brand: famous in sport and present as official timekeeper at major sporting events in the world, already since 1881 in the American horse racetracks. Sponsors of many activities in the aeronautics field, baseball, basketball, gymnastics, equestrian sports, motor racing, skiing, tennis, cycling, archery, sponsor of international sports federations including the FEI, also accompanied several adventurers in their expediotions, creating navigation tools for stormy seas, for the exploration of virgin places of the globe, and for the opening of new airways setting aviation records. As well as every stage of its evolution: from the crown-wheel escapement pocket watch to the lever escapement watch, from the manually-wound mechanical wristwatch to quartz movements, and including self-winding calibres.

In addition there are preserved unique documents such as photos, advertisements, billboards, movies, medals, archive material and about eight hundred books of établissage that reveal page after page the secrets of historic timepieces of the brand, from its beginning in 1867 to 1969. This priceless source of information, completed and archived for subsequent periods on other media, lets you know the location of the watches from the factory until the date of sale by the representatives of Longines around the world.

“Elegance is an attitude” is the slogan that accompanies Longines from decades and expresses its philosophy. Elegance not only in appearance, but in all aspects of a gesture or a personality. Virtues embodied by the ambassadors of Longines elegance, from Audrey Ephborn to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan today. Elegance combined with precision, these are the core values of Longines, and the same ones that are found in all the disciplines supported by the brand. Precision that even before being fine-tuned during the countdown, is already inherent in the chronograph itself at the moment of its creation, into the very accurate hand assembly done piece by piece by watchmakers for the creation of each timepiece and every its component, as well as in long test about the proper functioning of its charge or during the waterproof test using machines that reproduce extreme conditions for the more sporty models. That’s what happens into the secret T2 department of the office.
